The human race has an interesting way of meddling with all sorts of things that make up our world to try and make new stuff. Sometimes it leads to poisonous substances that cause more harm than good and other times it leads to useful substances that have a wide range of uses in many different areas. One of those ‘inventions’ is polyurethane foam. Most people know about it, but most people do not really know what it really is. This article is not about to try and explain just what it is, but rather one its many uses – especially as regards closed cell polyurethane foam. Closed cell polyurethane foam is often used as insulation in houses and other buildings. There are many advantages as to why this type of foam makes such a good insulator aside from the fact that it is easy to install if you have an experienced foam contractor doing the job. It can be installed in nearly any building and any location and it does not require a lot, if any maintenance.

All you need to maintain the foam can be found at your local hardware store and you do not need a specialist to do it either. It can be done by anyone with a little time and effort. But there is more. The closed cell polyurethane foam is seamless. That means that there are no joints or seems that often allow outside air or water to pass through the insulation into the building. Therefore, this kind of insulation is also airtight and watertight making it ideal to keep both the temperature constant and to keep things dry. One of the advantages of closed cells over the open cells is also the fact that the closed cells will not absorb water making it even more effective to reduce leaking.

The amount of insulation that is provided by the closed cell polyurethane foam is measured with the R-Value. The R-Value refers to the ‘resistance to heat flow’ or how much heat the insulating material allows to pass through it. The R-Value of about one pound of normal foam is about 2.5 to 3.7 per inch. In contrast, a two pound piece of closed cell foam has a value of almost 6.7 per inch! This gives you a substantial amount of more insulation than the usual type of foam. There are many different kinds of polyurethane foam that is used for all sorts of applications.

They are used in furniture, in manufacturing, and in many other industries too numerous to mention. The one place where it is most often used for the average person is in insulation. Closed cell polyurethane foam is an excellent insulating material. Easy to install, easy to maintain, and good value for money, you cannot go wrong with it. Just make sure that you have an experienced and qualified contractor to install it and you will never have to worry about warm air escaping again.
